Kinja'd!!!

It takes a lot to get me going, but with the way things have been on the book of faces recently, I have to say something.

Be excellent to each other. It’s not hard to understand. We do it so well here, but off the internet, many citizens of this earth don’t understand that.

The internet is a medium that brings out the worst in people. You see them all over your Facebook feed, taking a mile when given an inch. The voice of degeneration whose least offensive cry is “get back in the kitchen.” They label people as “bitches,” “fags,” and enough racial and other bigoted slurs to make you believe the earth has reversed rotation. What they don’t realize is that everyone they put down is facing an uphill battle, while the posters I’m talking about started at the summit and are throwing rocks at everyone. It’s time we all cut these people out like a cancer, and leave them miserable and alone. And if you dare to stand in the face of equality, you don’t deserve to walk this earth. Now please, if you think your life is hard, count your blessings. Chances are that you’re complaining about nothing.

Two very heavy yet quick cars for your time.

I’m all for removing anonymity from Internet discussion platforms owned by public corporations.

You don’t want people to find you and hold you responsible? Then keep your thoughts to yourself. Don’t want the cops or the government to see your online activity? Take it offline or to your own private platform.

IMO the Net is for convenience, not a platform to do stuff that you aren’t supposed to do in real life.

I’ve only been on FB for about 6 months and I’m ready to “unfriend” my entire family and about half my friends.

Its littered with Trump v Hillary or Legalize Pot BS and Im really getting tired of it.

So you’re saying that you’d be willing to give out your full name and address, which could then be linked to your phone number, place of work, and any family members you have who don’t even use the internet?

How about we don’t do that.

Far from it. My ideal online discussion platform would be something that requires verifiable ID to register as a member.

Someone using the account to post threatening, offensive or otherwise illegal items can be immediately traced and reported to police.

I suppose the membership would be smaller than a site that allows anonymous registrations.

Facebook has 1.23 billion users. If they implemented this system and somehow maintained that user base, they’d need several million moderators just to view and file reports. Twitter has 313 million, again requiring several million moderators. And you can’t just let the community moderate itself, because then the information will 100% get used for nefarious purposes alot. Imagine if you posted support for your favored candidate in the presidential election (and debated with opposition, both sides very civilly), and some nutjob from the other side is able to get your full name and address? We would never be able to even have civil discussion of any topic which involves “sides” ever again, at all ever. You couldn’t even risk posting “I really dislike the new Honda Civic”, because there’s a chance that someone who is mentally ill, and really loves the new Honda Civic (these are not things which I’m connecting), decides to track you down and beat you up or murder you.

Actually, this suggests that the lack of anonymity may make things even worse.

What’s needed is some way of holding people accountable. Back before social media (and social media users being wannabe channers) really took off, bans from BBSes, Usenet newsgroups, IRC servers and forums meant something. Usually because the admins would figure out who you were pretty quickly and put an end to your ban dodging attempt.

Now? You can go hit up some random meme page on Facebook and cry oppression over people suggesting that you might be a bit bigoted for calling to run over peaceful protesters or for saying “kill all the brown people” (usually it’s even cruder). Or claim that the people chewing you out were “triggered”.

I suppose one upside of Oppo is that we don’t usually attract that sort of demographic, the Murdoch and Milo sympathiser(s) asides.

I deleted Facebook. The only people that seemed to use it I knew were those with very troubled lives, or those that were extremely depressed. Plus, with reports of them banning and censoring pages and posts that don’t deserve to be banned while leaving up pages and posts that are completely despicable is another downfall with the network. Facebook and Twitter are falling downhill. At least Instagram and Snapchat seem to be okay for now.
